A new customer approached ADF Scale in need of a Bespoke solar-powered quarry scale solution. They needed to weigh extremely heavy sandstone blocks extracted from their quarry. The requirement was clear: each scale had to handle up to 8000 kg. It had to withstand constant heavy use and be easily portable across a potentially wet and uneven site. And it also needed to operate without mains power.
To meet these challenges, ADF designed a robust, extra-heavy-duty weighing platform measuring 2000 mm × 1500 mm. And it needed to be capable of handling shock loading while delivering reliable, accurate measurements in demanding conditions.
A Fully Portable, Solar-Powered Solution
Portability was critical. ADF engineered a custom base frame with lifting guides and runners for easy transport via rough terrain forklift trucks. The design elevated the weighing platform to prevent water ingress from affecting performance, ensuring long-term reliability in wet conditions.
We delivered the power through a high-capacity lead-acid battery. This was then constantly charged by a high-efficiency solar panel, thereby eliminating the need for external power sources. This means that the entire system was charged continuously by a high-efficiency solar panel, including the weighing platform, base frame, solar panel, and battery housed in a heavy-duty steel container, was self-contained and easily portable.
Precision Engineering for Demanding Environments
The weighing display, designed for low power consumption, was housed in a stainless steel waterproof enclosure. Mounted on a purpose-built swivel bracket for optimal operator visibility. Fully welded stainless steel IP68 load cells with waterproof enclosures provide durability and long service life.
The entire project, from the initial design through fabrication, construction, assembly, and calibration, was handled by ADF at our facility in Cannock, West Midlands. And, since we delivered them, the two bespoke solar-powered quarry scales have been performing flawlessly since installation.
